  1. A sailor fell from the upper deck overboard, They threw a life preserver and line but the shark was faster. They also saw one of our own submarines die due to malfunction or human error. They did night patrol and escort duty in all weather including at least four hurricanes in an upgraded WWI vessel in shark infested waters. There were several close calls. Including one where the cook went fishing and they wound up with a live shark over 10′ long and 32″ between the eyes on the after deck the chief shot. The captain went from running a hospital ward to a combat training officer program after they brought in the surviving sailors of the first American Destroyer torpedoed with terrible wounds and limbs blown off. They were brave men and only the sheer toughness of the old ship and their courage and determination saw them through,
