Buell Road

North of Cincinnati, in Colerain Township, sits Buell Road, and an urban legend that promises death within 7 days to those foolish enough to tempt fate by summoning a phantom bicyclist. Yeah, kind of sounds like ‘The Ring’, only without the VHS tape (who even owns a VCR anymore?). The road twist and turns for a bit before coming to a straight away, this stretch of straight road is where you can supposedly conjure a little boy on a bike.

The legend says that if you stop on the part of the road, and flash your headlights 3 times, leaving them off after the final flash, a boy on a bike will come around the corner behind you. If he reaches your car before you turn the headlights back on, you will die within 7 days. Who he is, or why he has it in for headlight flashers, is, as usual, unknown. Having tested this myth out a few times myself, i can tell you I’ve never seen the boy on the bike, nor have I ever died the following week. However, stopping on an unlit road at night, and turning your headlights off might not be a good idea regardless of an evil bicyclist, so I’m going to recommend you don’t bother trying.

While researching this legend, I found nothing to suggest how or when this one got started. It is worth mentioning that this is the site of the May 29th, 2007 wreck that killed 14-year-old Lauren Dietz & 15-year-old Miranda Phelps. A car with 5 students from Northwest High School wrecked here, killing these two young girls. There is still a memorial at the site, as pictured below. However, this legend was around long before this accident, and doesn’t appear to be related to it.

Directions

From I-275, take the US 127 / Hamilton Ave. exit, and go south towards Mount Healthy. From there, turn right on Civic Center Drive, then left onto Pippin Road. The first street on your left will be Buell Road. Follow it until you reach the Straight away. You’ll know your there when you see the memorial site.

  1. I didnt know lauren or miranda, but I had friends who were friends with them. I go down this road all the time to visit them. I even ran into laurens dad once. this road is NOT haunted. creepy? yes. but not haunted if anything, its sad seeing their crash site. & no they are not related to any legend.

  2. I live on this road, for 20 some years and I have not once seen anything go on right up the street where I live. It is a curvie road . To manyv people speed down this road and think it is a fun thing to do. But there use to be people would go up on the side of the hill and have sayionces and u would hear them at night doing weried sounds.

  3. I lived on this road from 2003-2006 and we DID see the boy on the bike. We knew NOTHING about the legend until after we had moved away and found a “haunted Cincinnati” book at the store. We lived just up the street from the bend in the road pictured here. It was really late, like 3am when we were driving home and as we reached this stretch of road, we caught a young boy on a bicycle coming the opposite way in our headlights. We were absolutely confounded as to why such a young boy would be on his bike in the middle of the night on a pitch black road, but we just forgot about it until I came across the mention of the ghost. I don’t think you should go out there and mess around. After all, we lived there 3 years and saw him just one time by chance. And the other poster said they have lived there 20 years and never saw anything. It WAS chilling though when I realized what it was.

    • I lived in the area during High School, and have seen this boy, his name was Daryl. He lived up by Colerain ave. but got lost coming home on his bike, pretty sure he got struck by a car back in the 1980’s. If you see Daryl, take a good look at his bike, it was mangled up. Very creepy. Glad others have seen him. I’m not the only one.

  4. In 2003 back in high school a friend and I saw an old man riding a bike down the road. We didn’t know anything about the legend until a couple years later and there was no boy, but it was still really creepy.

  5. My parents and myself went to Northwest and lived a few miles from Buell. My dad said many people have been killed on this road. Munchkin land is a mile away and because of the superstition around it teenagers would drive on these dark, dangerous roads on Friday and Saturday nights for something to do. Problem is people joyride and race and have caused a lot of accidents. I also heard about the witches on the hill that is also on Buell road, as you come around and start to see rumpke dump there is a driveway with rodiron gates and that is suppose to be where the witches are at. I just remember driving back there when I was in highschool and we never saw anything, but we were also focused on munchkin land.

  6. Anyone know who used to own the farm house that was at the end of the drive that the gates blocked. The house burnt down and now it’s a nature preserve but all throughout highschool we would run around back there
